Summary | Deep learning techniques have allowed progress in the field of image recognition and natural language processing. The software AlphaGo has finally won against South Korean champion Lee Sedol. Yann LeCun claims that in 10 to 15 years, every car will be autonomous and that maybe it will be impossible for people to drive a car since human beings are less reliable than computers. Claude Berrou is also very optimistic regarding the potential of deep learning.

Summary | Yann LeCun is a master of artificial intelligence; he will be at the Collège de France on Feb. 4th. LeCun was inspired by Chomsky and Piaget's debate about innate or acquired language; later, he did his PhD on artifical neurons. He joined Facebook in 2013. Thanks to his research, our cell phones' assistants can now recognize human voice, and people's faces can be identified in pictures. LeCun also invented "deep learning".

Summary | Most big tech companies seem to agree: chatbots are the future. They mean a move from downloading several apps to using just one app that incorporates services (chatbots) from third parties. These third party services are accessible through a conversational interface: chatting with a bot. Artificial intelligence research is making huge strides but is still faulty as the Tay debacle showed. Microsoft let their AI chatbot Tay loose on Twitter to learn how people actually speak. What Tay learned however was mostly racist and otherwise inappropriate so the experiment was ended prematurely.

Summary | Mark Zuckerberg has expressed the goal to design a digital assistant. It should be able to help users simplify some daily tasks. It should, for instance, be able to recognize the face of anyone ringing the doorbell and unlocking it if that person is allowed to enter. This could be particularly useful for the elders. It is however questionable whether Facebook's digital AI assitant can replace human companions or pets.

Summary | Google is launching a voice command assistant called "Google Home". Much like Amazon's Echo, it is a little speaker which picks up verbal commands from casual conversation and delivers answers to various questions or plays the music users request. Google's two decades of experience with online searches has given them enough data to be able to teach and AI robot what words mean in context.

Summary | Some researchers say that artificial intelligence may eliminate the need for human programmers. Modern programs are becoming more similar to human brains in that it is no longer just the programmer who creates every step of the program but the program itself is capable of learning from experience (technically: exposure to large amounts of data). Some find this idea that computers will become intellectual equals of humans frightening.
