Summary | Youths have been taking nude images of themselves since the advent of the polaroid camera so it is only fitting that sexting is becoming more and more common among teenagers today. What many don't fully realize is how these risqué selfies can ruin their life. Once they are sent, the sender loses all control over them. The recipient can willfully or by accident publish these images and there is nothing the victim can do about it. Experts advise youths to think about their 'online brand' which will likely live for decades and how they want it to represent them.

When TEEN SEX shouldn't be a crime

Summary | Australian law-makers are urging a change of legal dealings with youth sexting cases. They request increased judicial freedom in dealing with cases that technically fall under child pornography/sex offender laws but are really peer-to-peer mediated sexual conduct. Most would agree that there is a clear difference between a sexual predator who exploits young children and collects childpornography versus a teenage couple of an 18 year old and a 16 year old sexting back and forth. Both these examples are however dealt with under the same law. Both result in an inclusion on the sex offenders list for several years (or life-long in repeat cases). Considering the second example, it is extreme to ruin two young people's career and travel opportunities because of a few ill-advised selfies.

Summary | A recent breach of Apple's iCloud led to many high-profile Apple users image data being leaked. Many nude images of famous actresses were publicized this way and Apple is not facing harsh criticism though they are claiming not to be responsible. This incident shows how ubiquotous sexting has become and also the technically unlikely but possible risks involved in it. Though sexologists agree that sexting can be beneficial for 'spicing up' one's relationship, they also warn of the risks. People who send nude photographs or videos are tricked by the false appearance of privacy of the smartphone and may sext in the heat of the moment or while drunk. Many regret sexting afterwards, especially if their images are seen by someone who was not intended to see them. Instances like these can cause trauma in victims.

Summary | A Hamilton police offices is being charged with sexual misconduct with witnesses and other individuals connected to the victims in his investigative cases. The charges include sexting, sex, as well as sexual assault. (Note that sexual assault does not necessarily mean forced rape in Canada but also applies to instances where power/authority balance is highly uneven between participants.) The police officer pleads guilty to nine instances of misconduct. This shows that sexting is an officially used word with a fixed meaning within the Canadian police and that it is an important enough genre of sexual misconduct to be listed alongside sex and sexual assault.
