The news media have been reporting about covfefe for hours with millions of people cracking jokes about it on Twitter and other social media. This alleged mistake (which was taken down after five hours) managed to dominate the political discourse in the US rather than any actual pressing issues like the Presidents possible ties to Russia.

Summary | A new book titled "Twitter and Tear Gas" by Zeynep Tufekci is coming out. It discusses the infuence of social media on protest culture. The author has been present in many recent protest movement: Occupy Wall Street, the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul, the Tahrir Square protests, and many more. In her book, she concludes that social media help mobilize many people very quickly, as the anti-Trump marches have shown. However, this ease with which people are mobilized to attend a protest make the ties within the protest community looser making it difficult for the movements to overcome issues later on in the process.

Summary | The author says that she teaches her daughter that the internet does not forget and that female nudity rarely benefits the nude woman in the long run. However, there seem to be contradicting cases. Women's and men's careers have been both destroyed and boosted by the leaking of nude images, sexting selfies, or revenge porn. Most recently, Donald Trump has been caught first defending his wife's honor and accusing Ted Cruz of posting nude footage of her modeling days to then later post images of his wife and Cruz's wife to make the point that his wife is hotter.

Summary | In this election cycle, no one can ignore YouTube. This year it is clear that if one candidate does not advertise their campaign on YouTube they are going to lose. Data collected by Google shows that younger generations are far more likely to watch content on YouTube than on TV. Even 50% of babyboomers watch videos on YouTube. Also, YouTube has the advantage that users can share content with others on various platforms whereas on TV they can only watch the content.

Summary | The new novel "I Hate The Internet" by Jarett Kobek poses a lot of interesting questions about how social media is affecting our society. The main question is: why is everyone willingly giving away their intellectual property on platforms owned by for-profit corporations? How did these capitalist platforms become to be perceived as the most appropriate space to exercise one's freedom of speech? Wannabe social activists think they are helping a cause by posting provocative comments on social media but few people are getting active for real social change.
