Summary | A list of popular messengers is analyzed in terms of how well they protect their users' privacy. The safest one is Signal and many others have end-to-end encryption, for instance WhatsApp. They still collect the metadata though (interlocutors, time of interaction, location). Some even save the content that is sent around - most shockingly Snapchat which is popular becuase it supposedly leaves no trace. Some messengers supposedly have ties with national security ministries, like Telegram in Russia and Viber in Israel. Apple recently refused to work with the FBI in giving away a customer's personal information.

Summary | A new breed of celebrities has emerged: social media celebrities or 'influencers' as they are called in marketing. These ordinary youths have millions of followers on Instagram, Snapchat, Musical.ly, or YouTube and are attractive to advertisers, not only because of their large following but because their fans feel personally close to them and are more likely to accept advice from them than from a distant celebrity. It is however still illegal to covertly advertise a product without notifying viewers that they are viewing sponsored content.

Summary | Some companies are redesigning and selling so-called 'dumbphones' again: cell phones that can only be used to do phone calls and send SMS text messages. Even though that technology seems archaic now, the first iPhone was released only ten years ago. Many people are overwhelmed by the constant distraction of smartphones and might opt to simpler devices.

With technological innovation our digital communication has become more and more multimodal. The general tone has become quicker, more informal, and contains emojis. Social media are taking over what used to be social hobbies like sports clubs and such. It remains to be seen whether future generations will consider the broad surveillance and big data as boon or bane.

Summary | Emojis have gotten a lot more socially inclusive lately, representing several shades of skin and hair color, mixing up male and female stereotypes by for instance featuring a prince emoji and a policewoman emoji, as well as adding a gender-non-conforming emoji, and an emoji wearing a hijab. One group however still feels left out and is very vocal in their demand for an emoji that represents them: red-haired people. A petition has been signed by several throusand people but it is not likely that there will be another update to the emoji collection soon.

Summary | The iPhone has many features that you may not know about. You can create shortcuts to type your favorite emojis rather than search them manually on the keyboard. With a simple touch of the home button you can reorganize your screen so that when using your iPhone one-handedly even smaller hands can reach all content that would usually be at the top of the display. You can have Siri acoustically announce who is calling. To improve your selfies you can use the volume button on your headphones to take a picture from afar. Also, to avoid anxiety from lots of app notifications you can just deactivate those.
