How silicon valley is erasing your individuality

Summary | Google and other major tech companies are trying to increase their monopoly and reach every area of our lives. It seems that those companies can now do anything; they are all competing to become the best personal assistants. Thanks to artificial intelligence softwares, they want to be constantly by our sides and never leave us. Major tech companies believe we are all "social" beings. Therefore, they try to create "social" platforms where we can all collaborate. They think that by bringing us together, they will make a better world. When it comes to individuality and free will, tech companies know what they're doing. They have algorithms that tell us/suggest what to buy, what to read, or what to do. The dominance and monopoly of big tech companies can be dangerous; it can lead to conformism and privacy issues.

Summary | Dhruv Batra, a researcher in artificial intelligence, read many Facebook posts and tweets describing apocalyptic scenes about the fact that artificial intelligence had invented a new language. Batra wrote an article denouncing how the media portrayed the event. When Facebook programmed two bots to teach them how to negotiate, employees noticed that the bots had invented their own language. The new language was based on English vocabulary; therefore, it was more or less comprehensible. But since the program was not working the way it was supposed to work, workers modified it. They didn't "kill" it, so there is no reason to panick.

Summary | With artificial intelligence, humans are not the only ones who can make decisions. Algorithms and AI can actually be more precise than humans; this is why machines are more and more present. However, intelligent machines are not perfect; they can be biased and make infair decisions. Therefore, we should be careful with AI and keep scrutinizing algorithms.

Summary | Facebook's bots Bob and Alice were shut down after they created their own language. The new form of communication was more efficient for Bob and Alice, but in creating this new language, they didn't accomplish their task (i.e. learn how to negotiate like humans). Robotics Professor Kevin Warwick thinks we should be careful and not think this is not dangerous.
