Summary | One Virginia county saw a huge Instagram sexting scandal break. Nude selfie of local high school and middle school girls were pooled by the local boys and uploaded to an Instagram account. Because many teenagers were involved, this case developed into a huge police investigation trying to figure out the extent to which this constitutes organized crime or child pornography. This case shows how commonplace sexting is among teenagers and how confused the police are in dealing with such cases.

Summary | Teenagers all over the world seem to be sexting. Australian studies have shown that sexting does not appear to have an impact on sexual activity as the statistics have remained the same as twenty years ago when we did not have this technology. A mass of news reports exists on how teenagers were harmed by sexting but the majority of sexting teenagers fortunately do not experience these problems. Parents should teach their children to be respectful towards other (not share their texts) and not be too worried if their teenagers are sexting - it is a modern form of 'courtship'.

Summary | Instant messaging has overtaken texting: The average British person sends just seven text messages a day compared to 46 instant messages. Popular apps are WhatsApp, Facebook messenger, and Viber. Many people have five messaging apps on their smartphones on average. The high amount of instant messaged sent can partly be explained by the flatrate cost rather than paying for every message individually. A Michigan University study shows that half of 18-24 year olds (over 3000 participants) engage in sexting.

Topic Tags | pornography, sexting, threat, youth
Summary | 'Sexting' is only used in headline. Pornography is ubiqutous online. This is a huge problem because teenagers could receive the most part of their sexual education from pornography. This would likely lead boys to objectifying girls and girls to thinking that their value lies in their conforming to the body standards set by pornography. Teenagers need to be protected from unsolicited explicit material online and sex education should be improved.

Summary | Sexting can be really great when one avoids these common mistakes and follows a few helpful rules: First, rely on words only as images can come back to haunt you. Second, do not use emojis because they can make you look childish and that does not help to build sexual tension. Then, let your fantasy roam free. You can imagine to be sexting with anyone, even fictional characters. Lastly, make sure you know what you are trying to achieve while sexting. Will you want to meet up with your sext partner later or is sexting all you want to do? If participants in a sexting sessio have different goals, it can get awkward and jeopardize the relationship.

Summary | Sexting is a great way to spice up one's marriage or to find out about one's sex partner's sexual fantasies and preferences. Many people do it, 66% report to have sexted before [no detailed information about this statistic].There are a lot of Do's and Dont's: Men should however never show anyone the sexts they received from women because they risk their reputation. One should always use sexting as an opportunity to find out what their sex partners secretely want in bed. Also, while many people think sexting with a third person while in a committed relationship is no issue, psychologists agree that it does constitute a breach of trust.

Summary | Many people lie when sexting, meaning that they might be having a snack in their kitchen wearing sweat pants but writing something completely different. Because sexting is so completely detached from any actual physicality the mere innuendo is enough to entertain participants, even if it does not lead to an actual orgasm. Sexting is in a way a 'shared daydream'. A recent study reports that about half of their informants had sexted even though they were not really up for it.

Summary | A study about college students' sexting activity published in 'Computers in Human Behavior' shows that 45% of women lie while sexting, for instance when saying that they are wearing lingerie when really they are really doing something completely different, as opposed to only 24% of men. Because sexting can be completely ficticious, one can adopt a different sexual personality in sexting exchange that is nothing like one's actual sexual personality. The study also shows that a lot of disinterested sexting happens where people just go along with it even if they are not that into it because they are 'bored'.
