Summary | A US study has conducted surveys among teenagers asking them how often they go out without their parents, whether they date or have had sex, how much they sleep , etc. The results show that teenagers go out/date less, sleep less, and have sex later in life since the advent of smartphones. Swiss media psychologist Gregor Waller criticizes the study because it bases its conclusions on mere correlation. It leaves out other important developments in the US since 2007 like the financial crisis. An equivalent Swiss study does not show similar results. Most Swiss teenagers continue to have a rich social life despite smartphones. Only about 10% of Swiss teenagers are at risk of smartphone addiction.

Summary | Lots of adults are virtually tied to their smartphones, even when crossing the street. The children, naturally, imitate this and for the "head-down generation". One cannot blame the children for becoming addicted to smartphones because they can only form into what they learn from their parents. No wonder that we are dealing with epidemic-like amounts of ADHD diagnoses: children are tranquilized with screens and later the developmental tolls of this are treated with drugs.

Books have had it hard as an entertainment medium in the age of endless social media threads and never-stopping, action-packed Netflix series. While Ruiz Zafón's books are not literary masterpieces, they succeed in captivating readers so that they do not even desire to check their smartphones for notifications for hours at a time!

Summary | The canton of Zürich has alotted some funds to go towards smoking prevention. Prevention organizations who try to stop youth and young adults between the ages of 12-25 from smoking cigarettes are sure that the brochures of the past decades are useless today. The digital natives need to be reached on their online channels via smartphone. Simple informative texts also won't do: the teens of today need quizzes, videos, images, etc.

We look at our phones 88 times a day on average because the expectation of a message releases dopamin into our blood flow. The same mechanism causes gambling addiction with slot machines. We need to make an actual effort to make room for smartphone and internet free time in order to stay focused on the task at hand. Otherwise we run the risk of suffering from a ‘digital burnout’.

Even older users are getting used to emojis since there is such a huge selection from which to choose.
