Summary | Selfies on social media can have huge currency. They serve celebrities and politicians to style themselves as down-to-earth. Taylor Swift further includes cats in her selfies for the additional cuteness factor. Angela Merkel's selfie with a refugee has served to send the message that refugees are welcome in Germany. Selfies can also be seen as inspired by emojis; people mimick the facial expressions or use a Snapchat filter to emulate emojis.

Summary | Punctuation marks are probably jealous of emojis because they are replacing them! Discussion about emojis is becoming increasingly political. New emojis represent various skin colors, and both men and women for all activities/professions, for instance a female police officer and basketball player. Apple has even decided to replace the gun emoji with a water pistol in light of recent gun violence deaths in the US. Most People however ridicule Apple's move and argue that it is more of a PR stunt than a political statement.

Summary | Apple will replace the pistol emoji with a water pistol emoji as a political statement. Apple has been known to take political sides but it is questionable whether censoring guns will help any cause, especially because the bomb, sword, and knife emojis are not being removed.

Summary | Soon after Coop has started charging for plastic bags - to spare the environment of excessive plastic waste - have they introduced free plastic toys. They are shaped like emojis and are attached to a suction cup so that children can stick them to any smooth surface. This commodification of emojis must be worth it if they are ready to go against their own principles of environmental friendliness for them.

Summary | Twitter refused to include a "crooked Hillary" emoji that Donald Trump requested during the election campaign. There is precedent where Twitter created included original emojis in connection with specific hashtags for advertising purposes: for instance for films or for both the Democratic and Republican party. It is unclear why they refused to work with Trump but now Twitter has not been invited to a Silicon Valley summit hosted by president elect Donald Trump.

Summary | Dystopias are being written about what is going to happen to society in the age of increasing digitalization of life. Predictions include that we will lose the ability to read and write because we will be able to do everything through voice command. We can already order piza at Domino's by using emojis only. The new literacy culture is limited to 140 characters and resembles in fact more an oral culture in which the truth is what is screamed the loudest.
