Doppelte Zeichenzahl bei Twitter? Nicht für Donald Trump
(Doubled number of characters for Twitter? Not for Donald Trump)

Summary | Twitter has announced that they will be testing a doubled 280 characters limit per tweet with a small test group. The 140 character limit is a remnant of Twitter's text-message related past and they have considered expanding it before, now they finally test it. The expansion of the character limit is meant to apply to all languages except Japanese, Chinese, and Korean because these languages already require less characters to express more content. Multiple Twitter users already panicked on Twitter saying that nothing can stop an international conflict if Donald Trump gets twice as much space on Twitter now. Twitter however confirmed that @realDonaldTrump is not included in the small test group.

Summary | One of the reasons why becoming 30 years old right now is not so bad is that one is practically a digital native but remembers a time before omnipresent internet and digital devices. One knows how to use all things digital, i.e. "speaks the language of the zombies", but knows how to avoid becoming a zombie.

Elf neue Wörter, die wir dringend brauchen

Summary | Our language cannot keep up with technological innovations and other changes. There are dozens of new scenarios that have no name and urgently need one. For instance the shame parents feel when their children join an idiotic fad like Pokémon Go or the neck deformation our generation will have from staring at a smartphone all our lives. Another discrepancy is that we have no catchy name for involuntary images taken of floors or the insides of our pockets. We also new words to describe intersex people or stretched out ears after a lifetime of ear-gaging.

Summary | The volunteer project U25 provides peer counseling for suicidal teenagers. All volunteers at U25 are between 17 and 25 years old and they get extensive training before they are given up to three cases at a time. They exchange emails with the suicidal peers trying to counsel them into psychological stability. The volunteer counselors are not allowed to give out their cell phone numbers or befriend clients on Facebook for their own protection.

Summary | Bernese city schools want to purchase one laptop or tablet for each student. The new cantonal curriculum wants new technologies to be integrated in class work projects. It is important that students learn to work with new technologies from an early age because they are becoming increasingly important. The only problem is that such a renewal would be hugely expensive.

Summary | People are annoyed by masses of refugees with smartphones. The fact that they own modern technological devices makes their right of asylum less convincing. What people forget is that if they had to flee their country, one of the first things they would pack is certainly a smartphone. Thanks to free WiFi or cheap international phone service deals, owning a smartphone has become a basic human requirement next to having food and shelter. WhatsApp and other messaging apps are refugees’ means to stay in touch with their family, navigate through foreign territories, and communicate with human traffickers.
