Summary | It is very difficult to get young people today engaged in politics. Political parties operate with archaic patterns of communication and youths do not identify with them anymore. Some young politicians try to address young people on social media to animate them to at least go vote. The tried to imitate the Ice Bucket Challenge and tried to launch an "I'm voting" challenge where users nominate each other to vote.

Summary | In his new book called "Facebook generation", Roberto Simanowski positions himself between the cultural pessimists and the digital euphorics. He does fear for our language competence and tied to it our memory. We tend to posts selfies and emojis rather than put our feelings into words. We tend to post a link to a song, a video, or an article rather than paraphrase that information make our point in an original sentence. This leads to the degeneration of our language ability and that inability to process information in our own words prevents the creation of memories. Instead we leave a huge digital data trail online.

Summary | Online dating is tricky because the apprearance of an abundance of romantic prospects makes us reluctant to stick with one person. Many people get into a state of sexual restlessness that borders on sexual addiction with the help of online dating apps. Many such apps encourage casual sex which bears the risk of sex addiction. One app notorious for being mainly for casual sex is Grindr, a dating app for gay men which is designed. Women on dating apps have the problem that they are most attractive in their early 20s to men of all ages which means that they are less likely to find a partner the older they are.

Summary | Facebook is testing a new function that tells blind users what is depicted by an image on Facebook. The system does not need human input to recognize the content of images - it has been feed with millions of images to "learn" to recognize certain things like the outdoors and sports. This is a way to include people with visual disabilities better on social media because a lot of the activity there is visual.

Summary | Instagram is the new place where beauty ideals are reproduced and policed. Such hashtags as the #thighgap and the #bikinibridge let users pull up a sea of skinny women's bodies which can be compared with each other. Although these trends are said to be about fitness and health, but the comments and likes show that the trends are more about a beauty ideal. This is misleading and dangerous.

Summary | Facebook messenger offers a lot of chatbots. They are however not very good - yet. They are most useful for finding out simple information quickly, quicker than if one were to google, say, the weather forecast. Developers are constantly working on improving chatbots. The most quickly developing technology is voice recognition so that people can speak with chatbots.Contrary to science fiction belief however, programmers have no intentions of making chatbots seem as human as possible - they should be efficient not mistaken for an actual person.

Summary | The recent terrorist attacks at a christmas market in Berlin have prompted a flood of empathetic social media postings. It is questionable how empathetic people really are when they showcase their solidarity on social media, say psychologists. They may just be submitting to peer pressure and conforming to what appears to be the popular, appropriate reaction - namely posting on social media.
